What Exactly is Organic Wine?

To put it simply, organic wine is a wine produced with organically grown grapes. There can be some confusion about organic wine as there is no current industry standard. For example, in the US, organic wine is, “a wine made from organically grown grapes without added sulfites.” In the EU, organic wine is “a wine made from organically grown grapes that may contain added sulfites.” Wineries and wines can be awarded other certifications such as SIP (Sustainability in Practice) Certified and Demeter.  Such a large array of certifications can often become confusing and overwhelming. When shopping for organic wines, and to help you cut through the clutter, try looking for the words “Made with Organically Grown Grapes.” Labels that include this verbiage are wines made with grapes from Certified Organic vineyards and contain less than 100 ppm sulfites.

Three of my favorite organic wineries:

Casa Benasal

“Work with Nature, not against her. By transforming our Casa Gran estate into a sustainable ecosystem, our core philosophy seeks to balance conscientious stewardship of the environment with the production of the highest quality wine grapes.”

Casa Benasal 750mL

Available in Red & White Blend: $12.99

Natural Origins

“We are dedicated to farming organically while improving our land’s biodiversity. We believe that the healthier the vineyard, the better the fruit and, of course, the wine. In other words, by nourishing the land and treating it with respect, we know that the land will give us back its finest fruits.”

Domaine Bosquet Natural Origins 3L

Available in Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec & Pinot Grigio: $19.99

Champagne Lacourte Godbillon

“The vine has a lot in common with Man: it needs to be watched and understood, educated, and helped to thrive in the terroir it finds itself. Great viticulture expresses the essence of the place in the grapes. Our vineyards are worked exclusively by our own team, Sébastien, Fabrice, and Alexis. In the winter we cultivate, plowing to break up the soil and mow the grass between the vine rows to maintain and develop soil life. The use of pesticides, weedkillers, and other anti-botrytis treatments are therefore unnecessary!”

Champagne Lacourte Godbillon 750mL

Available in Brut & Rosé: $49.99
