Derby Wines Guide

Well, it seems we are finally off to the races in regaining a bit of normalcy in our lives. Our favorite Kentucky pastime is once again on the horizon and at least a portion of Derby fans can be at the track to witness the Run for the Roses firsthand! So, now to the more important question. No matter where we are watching and celebrating, what should we be drinking?!

If you are fortunate enough to be at the track (or at home and want to pretend you are there), there will be many great wine selections offered by the official wine sponsors of Derby, Jackson Family Wines. Not to worry if you will not be in attendance, Liquor Barn has a supply of everything you would find at the track!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Drappier Carte D’Or Brut ($49.99, 91pts Wine Advocate) – A stellar bottle every year. Aromas of toast and Granny Smith apple give way to wonderful layers of peach and melon on the palate. A superbly long finish. This is one to savor.

La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($22.99, 90pts Wine Enthusiast) – A very well-made offering that is quite formidable for Pinot. Wonderful notes of spiced vanilla and pomegranate with a silky finish.

Kendall Jackson Kentucky Derby Chardonnay ($14.99) – The OG California designated Chardonnay has shipped us a new Kentucky Derby bottle! For the price, this seriously overdelivers. Always perfectly balanced with ripeness and acidity. Peach, vanilla, and a tinge of ginger are found in every enjoyable sip.

Pre-gaming in the morning before the races? The go-to breakfast and brunch wine cocktails are the classic Bellini and Mimosa. Pick up some Cielo D’or Brut Cava ($11.99) to lace with peach nectar or orange juice to get your day started on the right track. If you just want some straight bubbles, Gemma di Luna Prosecco ($12.99), Le Grande Courtage Brut/Brut Rose ($16.99) or the classic, Chandon Brut ($19.99) are perfect.

If the Derby party is at home again this year, there are plenty of other fun options to consider:

Try Old 502 Trifecta Red ($16.99). A collaboration with our friends at Old 502 this Liquor Barn exclusive is a fun, easy drinking red that’s perfect for your party with a great horse themed label to boot!

Want more horse themed wines? 14 Hands and Dark Horse are also available.

Wherever you are celebrating the race this year, make sure you are drinking well and staying safe.

Cheers!
